Meet Margo, A Gentle Calico Waiting Patiently For Love: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week
After raising kittens outdoors and watching her sister find a family, Margo is now waiting for a quiet home of her own.

HUNTINGTON, NY — This week's adoptable pet of the week is Margo, who arrived at the shelter quietly in November, “almost unnoticed by the world,” according to the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter.
Her dark calico coat “glowing softly even under fluorescent lights,” she was not alone. At her side was her sister, Josie, a pastel calico, and between the two young cats were seven tiny kittens — the result of what shelter staff described as “a hard beginning and a life lived carefully outdoors.” Both sisters were estimated to be about 1 year old at the time.
Margo’s story began beneath a neighbor’s deck, where she gave birth to four kittens. Shelter staff said she tried to care for them but lacked the confidence to do it fully on her own. When help arrived, she accepted it. The two sisters were brought into the shelter and spayed, while their babies were placed into foster care, where they could grow safely and gain strength.

In the months that followed, circumstances changed quickly. All of the kittens were adopted into permanent homes, and just this past weekend, Josie and her last remaining kitten were adopted together.
“And just like that, the shelter became quieter,” said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter. “Margo noticed.”

Shelter volunteers say Margo differs from her sister in temperament but is “no less deserving.” She believes in people, staff noted, but approaches life carefully and cautiously. She tends to observe from a distance first, building trust slowly and deliberately. She will come out to eat and, if visitors are quiet and gentle, drift a little closer. Occasionally, if she feels safe, she allows a brief moment of affection.
“If you get her motor started, if you hear that soft purr, you’ll both be in heaven,” shelter volunteers said.
Margo finds comfort in having a place to retreat when she feels overwhelmed — often a soft bed or beneath a bench — somewhere she can watch the room without pressure. Shelter staff emphasize that she is not fearful or broken, but thoughtful. She enjoys simple pleasures such as spring toys, wand toys she can leap after, and quietly observing when others receive attention and affection.
“She’s learning what it looks like,” the shelter said. “She just needs patience and a calm home.”
Medically, Margo is fully ready for adoption. She is spayed, microchipped, litter-box trained, parasite-free, up to date on vaccinations, and has tested negative for both FeLV and FIV. Emotionally, volunteers say she is still waiting, but prepared for her next chapter.
Although Margo lived peacefully outdoors with her sister and kittens, shelter staff believe she now deserves a quieter, more secure environment where she can be the only pet and receive consistent love and attention. With a potential lifespan of 20 years or more, they hope she will find a home filled with “safety, soft beds, full bowls, and a family who understands her gentle heart.”
Those interested in meeting Margo can contact the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter at 631-757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the shelter’s Facebook page, or stop by in person at 3 Verleye Ave. in East Northport. Visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m., with additional Thursday evening hours from 7 to 9 p.m. by appointment.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, shelter volunteers say the timing could not be more meaningful.
“Let’s give Margo the best gift of all: a home of her own,” Larkin said, adding that Margo is “waiting — quietly, patiently — for someone to choose her and whisper, ‘You are purr-fect for me.’”
