2 Firefighters Treated After Blaze At Islip Shipyard: FD

ISLIP, NY — Two firefighters were treated after a two-alarm fire broke out at a commercial building at an Islip shipyard Monday evening, fire officials said.

The Islip Fire Department was called around 7 p.m. to a structure fire at the Winter Bros Shipyard at 2 Athasca Road, according to the department.

Numerous calls reporting the fire were received, including from people across the canal, officials said.

Second Assistant Chief Farrell was first to arrive and confirmed an active fire inside the commercial building, prompting a working fire signal, according to the department.

Chief of Department Macchio arrived shortly afterward, established a command post and requested a second-alarm mutual aid response.

Islip firefighters stretched three hose lines to battle flames on both the first and second floors, officials said.

The building was unoccupied when the fire broke out, and searches found no victims, according to the department.

Because the building is located along a canal, fire boats from the Bay Shore and East Islip fire departments were called to assist with operations and protect firefighters working along the dockside.

The blaze was brought under control in approximately one hour, officials said.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene and released.

The Town of Islip hazmat team was also requested because of fuel and other hazardous materials inside the building. The State Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Coast Guard were called because of concerns about possible fuel and chemical runoff into the canal, according to the department.

Mutual aid was provided by the Bay Shore, East Islip, West Islip, Islip Terrace and Central Islip fire departments, as well as Exchange Ambulance of the Islips.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known and is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department's Arson Section.
