Heavy Rain Prompts Swimming Advisory At 9 Islip Beaches
Suffolk health officials are advising against swimming at several beaches across the town of Islip.
ISLIP, NY — Suffolk County health officials are advising residents to stay out of the water at nine beaches in the Town of Islip following heavy rainfall.
The beaches were among 63 across Suffolk County placed under a rainfall-related bathing advisory Friday because bacteria levels could exceed New York State standards, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

- Benjamin's Beach, Bay Shore
- Islip Beach, Islip
- East Islip Beach, East Islip
- West Oaks Recreation Club Beach, West Sayville
- Brightwaters Village Beach, Brightwaters
- Bayport Beach, Bayport
- Sayville Marina Park Beach, Sayville
- Bayberry Beach & Tennis Club Beach, Islip
Health officials said the beaches are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff, which can carry contaminants into surrounding waterways.
Swimming and other water contact should be suspended until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles, or at least 24 hours after the rain ends, officials said.

The advisory is expected to be lifted Saturday, Aug. 22, at 8 a.m.
Officials also urged people who recreate in waterways outside designated bathing beaches to use similar caution in areas affected by stormwater runoff.
