Heavy Rain, Possible Thunderstorms To Pelt Hudson Valley: NWS

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for southeast New York Thursday due to heavy rain and possible thunderstorms and flooding.

A flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. this afternoon through late tonight for southern Westchester county, according to the National Weather Service.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, particularly in rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

A hazardous weather outlook notice has also been issued for Rockland and northern Westchester counties.

“Showers and potential thunderstorms are expected to move through the area this afternoon and evening,” the National Weather Service said. “A period of heavy rainfall is possible. At this time flash flooding is not expected, but can not be completely ruled out.”

It predicts peak hourly rainfall rates could reach around 2 inches.

“Average rainfall amounts are expected to be between 1.5 and 2.5 inches with locally higher amounts possible,” the National Weather Service said.

The highest amounts of precipitation will be in the lower Hudson Valley counties, its meteorologists predict.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s line of storms will be bringing heavy rainfall to the Interstate 95 corridor from Virginia to Connecticut.

The National Weather Service's Albany office predicts the region will see “multiple rounds of showers over the next several days,” with the exception of Friday.

Following today’s stormy weather, Friday is predicted to be partly sunny with highs hovering around 80 degrees in the Hudson Valley.

Wet weather is expected to return for Saturday, when the chance of precipitation will be around 70 percent.

For Sunday, the lower Hudson Valley will have a 40 percent chance of showers, along with partly sunny skies. The mid Hudson Valley region’s chances for showers are higher on Sunday, or between 60 and 70 percent, with another chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon, meteorologists predict.

Today: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 5 p.m. High near 82. East wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 p.m., then a chance of showers between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Low around 63. Northeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 79. North wind around 8 mph.

Friday Night: Showers likely after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. East wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Northeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67.

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 81.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63.
