Ex-NYPD Chief Of Dept. Set To Run For NYC Mayor In 2029

NEW YORK CITY — A former NYPD Chief of Department has his sights on City Hall after announcing his intent to run for New York City mayor in 2029.

John Chell announced his 2029 candidacy in a social media video.

Chell was previously one of the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer and worked under Commissioner Jessica Tisch beginning in December 2024.

He retired last October after 30 years on the force.

“I’m retired. I live a simple life. I don’t have to do this. But I love this city—and I gave nearly 32 years to it. So what’s another 8 if it means helping course-correct?” he wrote in the post.

Chell is not the only candidate to announce a bid for the 2029 mayoral election.

In January, actor Michael Rapaport says he plans to challenge Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the next mayoral race.

The actor in a video posted to Instagram made his intention known to his followers.

“I, Michael Rapaport, will be running for mayor of New York City in 2029," he said. "You got ‘Zohran the moron’ now. But have no fear, Mayor Rapaport will be here.
