NYC Home Inspection Program Offers Free Checks To Prevent Costly Violations

The Department of Buildings expands inspections for decks, boilers and gas systems.

NEW YORK, NY— A free inspection program for homeowners and small property owners aims to help identify building issues before they trigger penalties, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Department of Buildings announced on Monday.

The program, called the No-Penalty Inspection Program, runs from June 1 through July 10 and allows property owners to request visual inspections at no cost by calling 311.

“Too often, homeowners only hear from government when something has gone wrong and a fine is already on the way,” Mamdani said. “We’re working to elevate programs that have long existed, and this one is about making city government a partner, not a punisher."

Officials said inspectors will review conditions and offer repair guidance before any penalties apply.

The inspection program covers decks and patios, retaining walls, building facades under six stories, boilers, gas piping systems, unregistered private elevator devices, sidewalk vaults and business signs.

City officials said this year marks the first time inspections include sidewalk vaults and gas piping systems.

The No-Penalty Inspection Program began in 2005 and has conducted thousands of inspections across New York City’s five boroughs, according to the Department of Buildings.
