ReWild Book Club: Braiding Sweetgrass

ReWild Book Club: Braiding Sweetgrass

Event Details

East Hampton Library, 159 Main St, East Hampton, NY, 11937

Our gardens are resting for the winter, but we keep learning!

ReWild / South Fork is partnering with the East Hampton Library and the Surfrider Foundation’s Eastern Long Island chapter to host a book club. We’d love for you to join the conversation.

Our first book is Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Kimmerer is a botanist and an enrolled citizen of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Her science background taught her to ask questions of nature. Her Potawatomi heritage taught her that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In the book she brings the two together through stories of wild strawberries, maple sap, moss, and of course sweetgrass.

Read the whole book, read a chapter, or just come to listen. Bring a friend!

To join:

- Pick up a copy at the Adult Reference Desk, borrow it on the Libby app, or bring your own copy

  • Come join us on Monday, November 16, 6 - 7 pm

We’ll be reading Braiding Sweetgrass during Native American Heritage Month, on Shinnecock and Montaukett homeland. Both Nations are still part of our community today, and we’re grateful for the chance to learn together.

Today, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation is headquartered in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The Potawatomi are a Great Lakes people, and in the 1800s the U.S. government forced them from their homelands, first to Kansas and later to Oklahoma.
