NORTHPORT, NY — Lulu, a young mother cat who protected her kittens from danger while struggling to survive outdoors, is Northport Cat Rescue Association’s Kitty of the Week.

At just over a year old, Lulu “should still be a kitten herself — playing, exploring, and discovering the world,” the rescue said.

Instead, NCRA said, Lulu has already lived through hardship while caring for her four kittens.

Lulu was living outdoors and raising her kittens when a homeowner saw a raccoon attempting to attack the babies, according to the rescue. Lulu immediately put herself between the raccoon and her kittens.

“Though small and outmatched, she fiercely defended her kittens, risking her own life to save theirs,” NCRA said.

The homeowner quickly brought Lulu and her kittens indoors and contacted Northport Cat Rescue Association. Because of that intervention, Lulu and her kittens were safe, the rescue said.

Lulu still has a scar above her eye from what she endured.

“The scar above Lulu's eye tells a story words cannot fully capture,” the rescue said. “It is a reminder of the battles she fought, the dangers she endured, her courage and the sacrifices she made to protect her babies.”

Despite what she has been through, Lulu remains affectionate and trusting, according to NCRA.

“Somehow, despite everything life has thrown at her, Lulu remains one of the gentlest, most loving cats you could ever meet,” the rescue said. “She still seeks affection. She still trusts people. She still purrs when someone shows her kindness.”

For months, Lulu cared for her kittens, keeping them warm, protecting them from predators and making sure they survived, NCRA said. Her kittens are now safe, healthy and thriving.

But as the kittens grow up, the rescue said Lulu is still waiting for someone to notice her.

“While her babies move on to bright futures, Lulu waits in a cage hoping visitors will stop and notice her and look beyond the scar and see the beautiful soul behind it,” NCRA said.

She is spayed, fully vaccinated, litter box trained, microchipped, and FELV/FIV negative.

Lulu can be visited at Pet Supplies Plus, located at 1960 Jericho Turnpike in East Northport.

On June 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Shelter Shout Out crew will be filming at Pet Supplies Plus. The rescue is encouraging people to visit, meet Lulu and help share her story with the community.

“Perhaps Lulu's happily-ever-after is waiting there,” NCRA said, “or the next person who walks through the door will be the one who finally sees what an extraordinary cat she is.”

Those interested in meeting Lulu or applying to adopt can visit the Northport Cat Rescue Association website, call 631-606-2631, or email info@northportcatrescue.org.

Northport Cat Rescue Association will also host an adoption event from noon to 3 p.m. on June 7, at Petco Huntington, 839 New York Ave., Huntington.

As a special incentive, NCRA is offering an “Adopt a Pair” promotion. For adoption applications received at the event, the adoption fee for the second cat will be waived.

“After everything Lulu has done for her family, isn't it time someone gave her a family of her own?” the rescue said.
