Suffolk Exec To Brief Public On Nor'Easter Damage As Storm Continues To Thrash Long Island

YAPHANK, NY — Suffolk Executive Ed Romaine will be joined by local officials and first responders to provide an update on the nor’easter impacting the region at a briefing at the county's Office of Emergency Management on Saturday.

High winds, rain, and potential coastal flooding are expected to continue until Sunday, officials say.

Romaine and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a regional State of Emergency. This was followed by declarations at the state level by Gov. Kathy Hochul, Brookhaven Town by Supervisor Dan Panico and Patchogue Village by Mayor Paul Pontieri.

Officials expressed concern about flooding and erosion in the region's low-lying coastal areas. The areas included Mastic Beach, Lindenhurst, and Southampton.

In Patchogue, the emergency declaration includes a provision where residents are barred from parking their vehicles in the street as to allow emergency vehicles to traverse the roadways. It will remain in effect until 24 hours after the emergency.

On Saturday morning around 17,000 houses lost power.

The briefing kicks off at 11 a.m. at the county's Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services Building on East Avenue in Yaphank. Blakeman is set to make his update at 12:30 p.m. in Garden City.
