Maintenance Artist
Directed by Toby Perl Freilich
2025, USA, 95 minutes
Mierle Laderman Ukeles was inspired by Marcel Duchamp to express the notion that routine maintenance – from changing diapers to picking up city trash – can be acts of performance art. Maintenance Artist isn’t just the story of the first resident artist in the New York Sanitation Department, it is about work and art in our last half century. Penetrating, provocative, funny, and moving, Maintenance Artist calls for a new way to be in and view our world.
