Culture, cuisine, and comedy came together to form an intricate network of hotels, bungalow colonies, and resorts throughout New York’s Catskill Mountains. With a strong Jewish lineage, the Borscht Belt came to be known as a distinctly American story—one represented by a diverse clientele that journeyed to the mountains in search of fellowship, basking under the warmth of the summer sun. Now, with the remaining hotel structures vanishing one by one, it is through these remaining artifacts, such as matchbooks, silverware, menus, and even architectural details, that this story can be shared. The lecture employs these relics to share with visitors the complete and complicated story of the Borscht Belt—one that extends before the Civil War and reveals the many industries, as well as individuals, that made it successful.
Presented live and in-person by <a href="https://alexprizgintas.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alex Prizgintas</a>.
A&nbsp;historian, musician, and lecturer who focuses on the neglected history of the Catskills and Hudson Valley region, Alex Prizgintas serves as president of the Woodbury Historical Society in Orange County, New York, and has been published in the&nbsp;Hudson River Valley Review&nbsp;and the&nbsp;New York Archives Magazine. A preservationist, Alex stewards the&nbsp;<a href="https://alexprizgintas.com/borscht-belt-tourism-history" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Richard L. Benjamin Collection of Borscht Belt Tourism History</a>, which contains hundreds of documents, postcards, and ephemera from the Borscht Belt era. Many of these items will be brought to the lecture for attendees to view live.

Demystifying Medicare&nbsp;is perfect for anyone trying to navigate our complicated healthcare system for older adults. The workshop is for people who already have Medicare and are considering changes in their coverage, as well as those soon to be 65, planning their retirement, or assisting relatives and friends with their medical decisions.
Demystifying Medicare is offered as part of the ongoing work of the Westchester Library System to provide authoritative, actionable information that supports seniors in being connected and well-informed. In this free, engaging session you will learn about the various parts of Medicare and the costs associated with medical and drug insurance provided by the government and private companies.
Topics include original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans (Part D), Medigaps (supplemental plans), and cost-saving programs like EPIC that can help seniors with limited resources.
This program is co-sponsored by Croton’s Recreation Department. Come and get a handle on this thorny subject in a user-friendly atmosphere. The Westchester Jazz Alliance Quartet is a premier jazz quartet that includes Charley Krachy, sax, Dave Frank, piano, Joe Solomon, bass, and Takashi Inoue, drums. Two of the members were closely associated with the legendary jazz pianist/educator, Lennie Tristano. The mission of the Westchester Jazz Alliance and WAJQ is, through education, performances, and jazz parties, to increase awareness, participation, and enjoyment of jazz in the New York area and beyond.

About Charley Krachy
A native son of Verplanck, Charley left at age 17 to join the US Navy. Charley has been playing the saxophone since the age of 10 and professionally for the last 35 years. During this time, he has performed at venues throughout New York - including Birdland and the Blue Note with jazz greats Ted Brown, Connie Crothers, Virg Dzurinko, Kazzrie Jaxen, Roger Mancuso, and Ratzo Harris. In 2016 Charley performed with the Kazzrie Jaxen Quartet at Lincoln Center. Charley has also performed in Stockholm, and Uppsala Sweden with Swedish pianist Boel Dirke and Guitarist Andy Fite.
