📰 News we're reading

1. Riverhead Man Found In Possession Of Child Pornography: Police (patch.com) — Riverhead residents are being alerted after police arrested a 33-year-old local man on Duryea Street, charging him with possessing and promoting child sexual performance material. Suffolk County police say the arrest followed an Internet Crimes Against Children tip and a digital forensics search, and they are urging anyone with information about similar crimes to contact national or county hotlines.

2. Schumer warns Pentagon delayed key Calverton PFAS investigation by more than a decade (timesreview.com) — A delayed Navy PFAS investigation at Calverton has Riverhead leaders warning that a growing contamination plume could threaten local drinking water and downtown revitalization efforts. Senator Schumer and town officials are pressing the Pentagon to accept Suffolk County's testing data, install more monitoring wells, and move quickly on a real cleanup plan before the plume spreads further toward Riverhead.

3. With first year behind him, Riverhead superintendent looks ahead (riverheadlocal.com) — Riverhead families will see noticeable school changes this year, from new flooring at Pulaski Street and playground equipment at Roanoke Avenue to solar panels and energy upgrades across multiple campuses. Superintendent Bob Hagan, now entering his second year, is also rolling out districtwide instructional goals and several internal leadership promotions aimed at strengthening classroom teaching and student support.

4. Riverhead cross country grows as athletes switch sports (timesreview.com) — Riverhead High School's cross country program is surging, as more student-athletes switch from soccer, football and other fall sports to join a growing, competitive team. Coach Tyler Lobenhofer credits year-round training and a strong team culture for drawing about 40 runners, with several newcomers now vying for limited varsity spots and eyeing a possible league championship for Riverhead.

5. New York Court Rules Local Cannabis Zoning Rule Preempted By State (nugmag.com) — A state appeals court has ruled that Riverhead's stricter cannabis zoning rule is invalid, finding the town's 1,000‑foot school buffer is preempted by New York's 500‑foot standard. For Riverhead residents, this means state‑approved dispensaries can't be blocked by tougher local distance rules, clarifying how much control the town actually has over where cannabis shops may open.
