MASTIC BEACH, NY — The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity track team recently clinched the League I winter track championship in a dramatic end to a recent meet — the closest win in history, school district officials said this week.

Coach Ed Noll described the accomplishment as a “total team effort."

After trailing by 5.5 points heading into the final event, the Colonials needed six points or a third-place finish or better to secure the title, and they finished third in the 4 x 800m relay to take home the championship with a half-point victory.

William Floyd’s sprinters and jumpers also put forth amazing performances, with Zavier Jenkins finishing second in the 300m and the 55m, "proving his worthiness" for the top 50 preseason runners list, school officials said.

Christian Hobson also had "a strong day," taking fourth in the 55m, second in the long jump, and second in the high jump, picking up big team points, according to officials.

Temarr Burwell took third in the high jump, and Isaiah Taylor placed in the high jump to pick up points for the Colonials. William Floyd scored points in all three relays to secure the win and take home the League I championship title.

Noll called winter track "an absolute grind" due to training outside in the elements, "and toughing it out through those cold days."

“The boys remain focused and steadfast throughout the season to do what needed to be done, to work hard and earn the title as league champions," he said.

The season continues with county championships and the state meet qualifiers in the coming weeks.
