Heavy Rain Prompts Swimming Advisory At 5 Smithtown Beaches
Callahan's Beach and four Nissequogue beaches are affected; the advisory is expected to lift Saturday morning.
SMITHTOWN, NY — Five Town of Smithtown beaches are under a swimming advisory following heavy rainfall, Suffolk County health officials said Friday.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued the rainfall-related advisory because bacteria levels could exceed New York State standards.

- Callahans Beach, Fort Salonga
- Short Beach, Nissequogue
- Nissequogue Point Beach, Nissequogue
- Long Beach, Nissequogue
- Schubert Beach, Nissequogue
Health officials said stormwater runoff from surrounding watersheds can carry contaminants into waterways, particularly areas with limited tidal flushing.
Swimming and other water contact should be suspended until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles, or at least 24 hours after the rain ends, officials said.

The advisory is expected to be lifted Saturday, Aug. 22, at 8 a.m.
The five Smithtown beaches are among 63 across Suffolk County covered by Friday's advisory.
Officials also encouraged people using waterways outside designated bathing beaches to follow the same guidance in areas affected by stormwater runoff.
