Smithtown Teen Writes 2 Novels, Earns Suffolk Distinguished Youth Award (patch.com) — Smithtown residents can celebrate a local achievement as Smithtown High School East 10th grader Louis Schmettan Jr. earned Suffolk County's Distinguished Youth Award. He explored 15 county parks and devoted over 100 hours to writing two novels totaling more than 350 pages, with hopes of publishing them later this year.
   

2. Smithtown junior is app-solutely fantastic (tbrnewsmedia.com) — A Smithtown High School West junior just won first place at Cooper Union's Summer STEM Pitch Competition with his medical app, Medisaurus. Aaron Matvenko's tool checks medication compatibility using FDA and other databases, earned him a $1,500 scholarship, and he's now pursuing a patent and public release.
   

3. 2 Long Island Leaders Join Guide Dog Foundation, America's VetDogs Board (patch.com) — Smithtown-based nonprofits the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs have added Long Island leaders Frank Palma and Celeste Lopes to their board of directors. The organizations, which provide guide and service dogs at no cost, say the new and returning members will help steer long-term strategy, fundraising, and growth from their Smithtown headquarters.
   

4. Teen killed in head-on collision in Olive (newportdispatch.com) — A 19-year-old man from Smithtown was killed in a head-on collision on Route 28 in Olive, Ulster County, that also claimed the life of a 72-year-old New York City man. State Police say the Smithtown driver's westbound Chevrolet crossed into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons, and the investigation is ongoing.
