Syracuse Common Council to hold public hearing on Westcott Theater's future (syracuse.com) — Syracuse's Common Council will hold a Sept. 9 public hearing that could revoke the Westcott Theater's permit to operate as an entertainment venue after a city report cited code issues, unpermitted events, and safety concerns. The owner and his attorney say the city's licensing rules and enforcement are unlawful, even as a high-priced Sept. 5 party remains on the calendar.
   

2. Asian Village will return to Fair next year as permanent exhibition (cnycentral.com) — State officials in Syracuse have confirmed that the New York State Fair's Asian Village will become a permanent cultural exhibition starting with the 2027 fair, after several successful trial years. The village, featuring performances and food from local Asian-owned businesses, aims to represent all 48 Asian countries and deepen cultural representation alongside the Native American, African, and Latin Villages.
   

3. Regional STEAM High School enters year two after enrolling nearly 250 freshmen in debut (cnycentral.com) — A new school year at Syracuse's Regional STEAM High School will bring a second class of freshmen into a now-finished building, after nearly 250 ninth graders logged 30-plus hours of hands-on learning last year. The Syracuse City School District program is recruiting students from across Onondaga County and deepening partnerships with employers like Micron and Amazon to connect teens with real-world careers.
   

4. West Nile detected in Hudson Valley bugs as infections rise nationwide (timesunion.com) — West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes across downstate New York, and health officials confirm one of this year's human cases is in Syracuse. With infections rising nationwide, residents are urged to use repellent, eliminate standing water, and check window screens to reduce mosquito exposure.
   

5. New York's 224th Air Defense Group Participate in Civil Air Patrol Encampment (af.mil) — At Hancock Field in Syracuse, members of the New York Air National Guard's 224th Air Defense Group recently gave more than 190 Civil Air Patrol cadets a close look at aerospace, cyber, and security careers. Representatives from the Rome-based Eastern Air Defense Sector showcased their round-the-clock homeland defense mission, answering questions and encouraging local teens to consider Guard service and its educational benefits.
