Picente announces ban on synthetic cannabinoids (cnyhomepage.com) — Oneida County has issued a new public health order, announced in Utica, banning the sale of all synthetic cannabinoids like K2 and Spice, with enforcement starting at midnight August 26. Sellers across the county, including areas such as Oneida Square in Utica, now face product seizures, $500-per-item civil penalties, and possible criminal charges if they're caught violating the rules.
   

2. Parkway Gardens in Utica begins construction (uticaod.com) — A $33 million, 71-unit Parkway Gardens redevelopment is now under construction in Utica, replacing outdated N.D. Peters public housing buildings with a modern, all-electric complex. Current tenants are guaranteed new apartments at no extra cost, and the project will add more affordable, accessible units near schools, transit, and parks while leveraging significant state, federal, and city funding.
   

3. Nyah Mway lawsuit against Utica moves forward (uticaod.com) — A federal judge has allowed most claims to proceed in the civil rights lawsuit over 13-year-old Nyah Mway's fatal 2024 shooting by a Utica police officer, including excessive-force allegations. The ruling keeps the case against Officer Patrick Husnay and the City of Utica alive, while dismissing only one negligent-hiring-related claim, as Nyah's family continues to seek accountability.
   

4. Utica's St. Patrick's Day Parade turned into the Dolly Parton Parade (uticaod.com) — Utica's long-running St. Patrick's Day Parade once had an unexpected star spectator: Dolly Parton, who died this week at 80 after a battle with cancer. Stranded in Utica by a 1993 blizzard after performing at the Stanley, she watched the parade from her hotel window, inspiring locals to nickname it the Dolly Parton Parade for years after.
   

5. Odessa Forward Ghiossi makes NCAA Commitment (nahl.com) — Utica University's men's hockey program is adding a high-scoring forward, as Odessa Jackalopes standout Caden Ghiossi commits to join the Pioneers this fall. The 20-year-old San Jose native brings back-to-back 31-goal seasons and Top Prospects Tournament honors to Utica, bolstering a Division III team that has reached the postseason five straight years.
