📰 News we're reading

• What's Next for Wawarsing Estates? (shawangunkjournal.com) — A long-stalled 182-unit Wawarsing Estates senior housing project is back under scrutiny as residents, activists, and town officials debate whether its old approvals and wetland reviews still hold up under today’s rules. After fierce backlash, a proposed law that would have let senior projects convert to general housing after 60 days was pulled, but the town board will still send it for review and hold a June 4 public hearing.

• Jeff Kaplan Responds To Criticism (shawangunkjournal.com) — Attorney and former Ellenville mayor Jeff Kaplan used the April 9 Wawarsing town board meeting to defend his role with the Wawarsing Estates project and answer critics. The board then advanced the controversial senior-housing law for formal review and set a June 4 public hearing that could decide whether age restrictions on local 55+ developments stay or go.

• Man charged with murder in connection with Ellenville homicide of village woman (dailyfreeman.com) — A murder suspect in the death of Ellenville resident Nicole Izabella Perez is due in Wawarsing Town Court on Friday, April 17, following his extradition from Florida. State police say 28-year-old Michael David Carman of Westbrookville faces a second-degree murder charge as the investigation continues, while friends have launched an online fundraiser to support Perez’s two young daughters.
