July 4 Weekend Weather: As Extreme Heat Warning Lifts, See What's Ahead

Long Islanders could see some soggy skies in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Crowds turned out to celebrate America's 250th birthday Saturday despite sweltering temperatures across Long Island.

But there could be some relief from the blistering heat in the days to come, according to the National Weather Service.

An extreme heat warning remains in effect across Long Island until 9 p.m. on Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

Dangerously hot conditions, with heat index values up to around 105 degrees, were forecast to continue across Long Island through Saturday night, the NWS said.

But a look at Long Island's weather for the week ahead indicates a pivot from the heat that's blanketed the area during the past days.

Here's a timeline of what's to come, according to the National Weather Service:

Saturday night

Showers and thunderstorms likely before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Increasing clouds, with a low around 70. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday

A slight chance of showers before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers after 11 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Sunday night

A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 p.m. Low around 65. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday

Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 80. East wind 13 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday night

Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 65. East wind 14 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
