• Sentencing set for former Charlotte councilwoman in COVID fraud case (charlotteobserver.com) — Former Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown and her daughters are scheduled for sentencing Sept. 22 in a federal COVID-relief fraud case tied partly to her local nonprofit. Brown, once celebrated as Charlotte's first formerly incarcerated council member, admitted to a wire fraud conspiracy after initially calling the case a political attack, and prosecutors say they won't recommend prison time for her.

Regional leaders must decide by early October whether to renew support, with potential tradeoffs including added green space, bike lanes, public art, and better food access if the project moves forward.
