• Sentencing set for former Charlotte councilwoman in COVID fraud case (charlotteobserver.com) — Former Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown and her daughters are scheduled for sentencing Sept. 22 in a federal COVID-relief fraud case tied partly to her local nonprofit. Brown, once celebrated as Charlotte's first formerly incarcerated council member, admitted to a wire fraud conspiracy after initially calling the case a political attack, and prosecutors say they won't recommend prison time for her.
   

• Charlotte area may have to pay back nearly $70M for I-77 South toll lane project (wbtv.com) — Charlotte and nearby towns may have to repay nearly $70 million to the state for the canceled I-77 South toll lane project, a decision that could hit local budgets hard. Regional leaders must decide by early October whether to renew support, with potential tradeoffs including added green space, bike lanes, public art, and better food access if the project moves forward.
   

• Gas and airfare hit record highs during Labor Day weekend travel (wsoctv.com) — Charlotte drivers are paying about $3.86 per gallon this Labor Day weekend, while Charlotte Douglas International Airport still expects more than 920,000 passengers through Sept. 8 despite high airfares. Travelers are adjusting plans, using gas apps, and even changing holiday trips as fuel prices in and around Charlotte stay well above last year's levels.
