Trains to sound horns in downtown Bismarck during Main Avenue construction project (centralndnews.com) — If you’re near downtown Bismarck’s Main Avenue rail crossings, expect louder trains as horns will sound while traffic signals at 3rd and 5th Streets are temporarily out during road construction. The quiet zone will return once signals are restored, with work expected to wrap up by September; residents can track progress on the city’s online construction map.

2. Fire burning at Bismarck landfill (kxnet.com) — A large fire at Bismarck’s city landfill on the east side of town is producing heavy smoke, and firefighters from the city, rural district, and airport are working to contain it. Officials don’t yet know how it started and are asking residents to stay away from the landfill until operations return to normal.

Exemplary Volunteers of the Year: Joanna Sindt (Minneapolis, MN) and Jim Papacek (Bismarck, ND) (salvationarmyusa.org) — Bismarck resident Jim Papacek is being honored as an Exemplary Volunteer of the Year for his years of cheerful bell ringing and more than 100 volunteer hours with The Salvation Army. Since retiring from local education, he’s become a familiar, encouraging presence at Red Kettles, helping raise thousands for neighbors in need while embodying steady, community-minded service.

4. 'Father figure': Bill Sprinkle, one of Montana's greatest athletes and sports advocates, dies at 80 (bozemandailychronicle.com) — Legendary Montana athlete and sports advocate Bill Sprinkle, remembered as a humble mentor and tireless supporter of young athletes, has died at age 80 at his home in Bismarck. Though most of his career unfolded in Montana, he spent his later years here, where family, friends, and former colleagues are mourning a devoted husband, father, and community-minded leader.
