📰 News we're reading

1. 'Time to say goodbye': Akron restaurant bids farewell after nearly 20 years (fox8.com) — A beloved downtown Akron staple, The Lockview, is closing after nearly 20 years serving grilled cheese and craft beer fans. Owners thanked employees and loyal customers in a farewell post but did not share a closing date or reason. The 1933 building's longtime tenant leaves a notable hole in the city's dining scene.

2. Summit County warns residents about jury duty scam (cleveland.com) — Summit County's Clerk of Courts in Akron is warning residents about a scam where callers pretend you missed jury duty and demand Cash App payments. Officials stress they will never call about jury service, urge you to hang up, share no personal information, and report suspicious calls to the Summit County Sheriff's Office at 330-643-2181.

3. Summit County property owners contest re-appraisal numbers (fox8.com) — Summit County property owners, especially in Akron neighborhoods like Firestone Park and Christensen Avenue, are lining up to challenge sharply higher home valuations that could raise their taxes. With only until August 27 to contest reappraisals, county officials urge residents to bring documentation such as private appraisals, photos, and square-footage corrections to upcoming "road show" sessions.

4. PHOTOS: Plane appears to have rough landing at Akron airport (fox8.com) — A small NetJets Cessna Citation had a rough landing Tuesday afternoon at Akron-Canton Airport, leaving its nose on the runway but causing no injuries. Emergency crews from the airport and Green responded, one runway was temporarily closed, and state troopers are investigating while the terminal remains open for travelers.

5. Civic assemblies, common in Europe, have helped build trust (cambridgeday.com) — Akron has launched a civic assembly to tackle the city's housing crisis, partnering with Unify Akron to recruit residents and build trust over 10 weeks of meetings. Organizers spent about 16 months planning the process, using outreach teams instead of mass mailings to form a representative group. Their goal is to give everyday Akronites real influence on housing recommendations.
