📰 News we're reading

• History Spotlight on Clauss Cutlery (portclintonnewsherald.com) — Fremont has secured a $1 million state grant to clean up the long-vacant Clauss Cutlery property on Ohio Avenue so it can be reused for much-needed housing. The story also looks back at Clauss’s early-1900s heyday, when its massive East State Street factory and dozens of other cutlery shops made Fremont the self-proclaimed “cutlery center of the world,” driving a similar housing crunch.

• Grant dollars to clean up local properties (norwalkreflector.com) — Fremont is receiving major brownfield funding to clean up the historic Trico Glass site and nearly $956,000 to remediate the former Clauss Cutlery property so it can become new single-family housing. These projects, part of a wider $61 million statewide grant package, aim to remove contamination, eliminate costly groundwater controls and open long-blighted Fremont sites to safer neighborhood use and future jobs.

• STATE TRACK: Clay's James suffers heartbreaking false start in 110 hurdles (presspublications.com) — At the state track meet, Fremont Ross junior Mason Englund was disqualified in the 110-meter hurdles final despite winning his preliminary heat by a wide margin, shaking up the Division II title race. The article centers on Clay High School’s athletes, including hurdler Barack James’ heartbreaking false start, but also notes how the Fremont runner’s DQ opened the door for another competitor to win.
