1. Federal sub-grant awarded to expand drop out recovery model to Youngstown (mahoningmatters.com) — A new Towpath Trail High School satellite campus is coming to Youngstown, backed by a federal sub-grant to help local teens and young adults finish diplomas and gain job skills. Opening in 2027, it will focus on construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and business training tailored to regional employers, with strong wraparound support for students who struggled in traditional schools.
   

2. SOBE sends disconnection notices to four customers (vindy.com) — Downtown Youngstown faces a potential heating crisis as SOBE Thermal warns four major building owners that steam service could be disconnected in early October over unpaid, sharply increased bills. With most of SOBE's 23 customers behind and the company saying it may shut down within 90 days, city leaders are scrambling for state help and a possible new owner to keep heat flowing.
   

3. Youngstown City School leaders want academic distress designation dropped (wkbn.com) — Youngstown school leaders are pressing state officials to remove the district's academic distress label after earning its best-ever three-star state report card rating. Board members argue the designation no longer reflects current performance, pointing to gains at Youngstown Rayen Early College and graduation rates, while acknowledging early literacy remains a serious area needing improvement.
   

4. Youngstown school board enforcing transportation policies (wfmj.com) — If your child attends Youngstown City Schools or certain local charters, the district is now strictly enforcing its 2024 transportation policy, including a two-mile walk zone for K–8 students and hub stops for high schoolers. Leaders say some students are newly labeled "impractical" for busing, but affected families may qualify for hub service or year-end payment-in-lieu options instead.
   

5. YSU President Touts Progress, Acknowledges Challenges (businessjournaldaily.com) — Youngstown State University is seeing a modest enrollment uptick while President Bill Johnson outlines how YSU plans to stay affordable, expand online offerings, and deepen community partnerships. He highlighted record philanthropy, the new Steubenville campus, and the Youngstown Innovation Hub, but warned that demographic shifts and visa delays for international students remain significant challenges.
