  • Sunday: Low clouds, with a high of 66 and low of 53 degrees.

📰 News we're reading

• Watch video of 2 orcas swimming near a seal on the Oregon coast (registerguard.com) — Orca excitement drew crowds to Newport on April 25, as Tidewater resident Jo Leach raced to Yaquina Head’s Cobble Beach and captured close-up video of two killer whales cruising near a wary seal. Parking was scarce, but a park volunteer helped the couple reach the rocky shoreline, where Leach filmed the now-viral Oregon coast encounter.

• Yet Another Rare Sighting of Snowy Owl on Oregon Coast (beachconnection.net) — A rare snowy owl has been spotted yet again at South Beach in Newport, giving local bird lovers another unusual chance to see the Arctic visitor up close. Photographer Jacklyn Larsen describes multiple Newport encounters since December and urges residents to keep their distance and use long lenses so the stressed, far-from-home owl can rest safely.

• Commercial fishing nets have new life in Ukrainian war zones • Oregon Capital Chronicle (oregoncapitalchronicle.com) — A recent shipment of 29,000 pounds of worn-out commercial fishing nets was loaded in Newport and sent to Ukraine, where they’re repurposed to trap Russian drones and protect civilians. The project, coordinated by an Alaska-based recycler and a venture capital firm, also keeps old gear out of local yards and the ocean while supporting Ukrainians under attack.
