Irrigation canal breach causing flooding on U.S. 730, some residences experiencing access issues (elkhornmediagroup.com) — Flooding from an irrigation canal breach near Kurz Lane is affecting access for several residences between Umatilla and Irrigon, with water crossing U.S. Highway 730. The highway remains open but drivers may face short delays while officials assess road damage and work to restore safe access. No injuries have been reported and the water source has been shut off.

2. CTUIR awarded close to $7 million for fish hatchery, collection activities (northeastoregonnow.com) — Nearly $6.91 million in federal funds is headed to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to modernize fish hatchery and collection sites, including facilities near Umatilla and Irrigon. The upgrades will strengthen treaty harvest support, improve internet connectivity and water systems, and better protect more than 4 million fish released each year in local rivers.

3. Greater Hermiston Community Foundation grants available (northeastoregonnow.com) — Nonprofits based in Umatilla can soon apply for Greater Hermiston Community Foundation grants of up to $10,000 to support local projects. Applications open April 20 and close May 13, funding efforts like community development, shared-space improvements, health initiatives, and arts or cultural preservation across Hermiston, Umatilla, Stanfield, Irrigon, and Echo.

4. CTUIR, Owl Research Institute install livestream camera for burrowing owls (eastoregonian.com) — A new livestream camera now lets you watch culturally important burrowing owls at the former Umatilla Army Depot near Hermiston, much of which is being transferred to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The CTUIR and partners hope the infrared-equipped camera, powered by solar panels, will boost public education and support for recovering owl populations that nest in more than 100 artificial burrows on the site.

5. Child abuse training is set for Wildhorse during Child Abuse Awareness Month (elkhornmediagroup.com) — A major child abuse training conference is coming to Wildhorse Resort & Casino, drawing law enforcement, social workers, and educators from across Eastern Oregon, including Umatilla County. Local residents are urged to report suspected abuse, with easy access to a state hotline and Umatilla County’s non-emergency dispatch. Organizers emphasize trusting your instincts when something seems wrong for a child.
