About Us

Education

Aequora: Teaching Literacy with Latin is an outreach program of the Paideia Institute, a non-profit organization that promotes the study of the classical humanities. The Aequora program is based on a custom 4th-8th grade curriculum focusing on literacy education via Latin. The lessons run from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. on Saturdays in the Harron Room at Easttown Library. Our branch is currently running a spring introductory course before starting the full curriculum at the start of summer. Through Teaching Literacy with Latin, young students can develop their English Language Arts skills and acquire strategies for vocabulary, reading comprehension, and spelling, all the while playing games and having fun with peers. About 60% of English vocabulary comes from Latin, and research shows that students who are exposed to Latin score higher on standardized tests and have improved literacy outcomes.
