The Carnegie Carnegie Studio Jazz Series welcomes Pittsburgh native Colter Harper — guitarist, composer, and author — for an evening in the Studio. Harper toured for years with multi-platinum band Rusted Root (guitar, percussion, vocals on Stereo Rodeo and The Movement), but his own recordings, including Under a Quiet Sun and Songs from the War Streets, draw on jazz, folk, and music he studied in West Africa, Brazil, and Europe. He's also the author of Jazz in the Hill: Nightlife and Narratives of a Pittsburgh Neighborhood. Joined by Dave Throckmorton on drums and Jeff Grubbs on bass.
Beer and wine by donation (21+). No outside alcohol.

More than 1.6 million people were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps between 1933 and 1945. One of them was Norman Roth.
Tonight, join Norman’s daughter Sue Tresatti for the heartrending 
story of her father’s imprisonment in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald 
concentration camps as a teenage boy. Upon arrival at Auschwitz, 
Norman’s life was spared for labor but his mother, younger sister, and 
younger brother were murdered in the gas chambers. Hear about how Norman
 survived years of horror and escaped to the West from behind the Iron 
Curtain, eventually settling in Pittsburgh.
Military researcher and WWII historian Richard Murphy provides 
historical context. A well-sharpened edge is much safer and more effective than a dull one, and with a little guidance, anyone can learn to keep their knife edges in excellent condition. Experienced sharpener Dennis Snedden will teach participants how to keep their own knives sharp and ready to use.Each participant should bring two or three 5″-10″ kitchen knives (non-serrated); a diamond, oil, or water stone (if you have one); a honing rod or steel (if you have one); your knife edge questions; and a will to learn! You will learn the best and safest techniques for honing a fine edge. Join Pulitzer Prize-winner Dr. Edda Fields-Black for a discussion of 
the holiday that celebrates Black liberation in the US: Juneteenth!
Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black is an award-winning 
historian, artist, and public humanities scholar whose specializes in 
technology and labor in West Africa and the US South. Her passion is 
uncovering voices that are not recorded in written sources and have not 
been previously heard and telling stories that heretofore have not been 
told.
In this special talk, Dr. Fields-Black will discuss her research on 
Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid, documented in her Pulitzer 
Prize-winning 2024 book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War.
 She will explore the connections between Harriet Tubman and other Black
 abolitionists with the freedom that defines Juneteenth as a holiday.
