Motorcycle Drive Helps Make Holy Child School Safer

Holy Child Catholic School in Bridgeville will soon have a new security feature, thanks to funds raised during a charity motorcycle drive in June.

About 23 motorcyclists participated in the June 22 drive to raise money for the Annie Baumgarten Children's Safety Fund. Money raised will be used to install a video surveillance system at Holy Child.

Bridgeville Police Chief Chad King said $2,320 was raised for the Children's Safety Fund, which was less than the $3,000 goal, but still a generous amount. Castaways waived the cost of food at an event held for participants after the drive, he said. 

In addition, King said United Steelworkers Local 9531—Universal Stainless in Collier Township—donated $2,500 to the fund, taking the total to $10,600.

"This being the first year, we didn't know really what to expect," King said. "That looks like it's going to be enough to complete the project."

King said the project at Holy Child is expected to start later this month.   

The Bridgeville Police Department partnered with the Knights Templar Motorcycle Charity Organization in June to raise money for the Annie Baumgarten Children’s Safety Fund, established after the former Bridgeville resident died in a motorcycle accident in Wyoming in June 2010.

King—who let one of his police officers tase him as part of a plan to raise money for the fund—said the Knights Templar plan to make the motorcycle drive an annual event, and that he's happy for the support.

"I’d like to thank those organizations for their generosity, the Knights Templar, Castaways and United Steel, and all who came and participated in the event," he said.
