📰 News we're reading

1. Council work session weighs lease to inventory Reed artifacts, $2.3 budget reallocation for failed city parks grant (theburgnews.com) — Harrisburg officials are preparing to lease downtown space to catalog more than 3,000 remaining artifacts from former Mayor Steve Reed so they can be auctioned, with hopes of breaking even on storage costs. City Council also reviewed reallocating $2.3 million tied to a missed Reservoir Park splash pad grant deadline and sent a controversial request to demolish a historic State Street wall back to HARB for more review.

2. Coroner IDs man killed in shooting at Harrisburg home (pennlive.com) — A Harrisburg man was fatally shot early Saturday in a North Third Street home, and the Dauphin County coroner has ruled his death a homicide. Police say 53-year-old Dowane Lewis died from a gunshot wound to the chest, marking the city's fifth homicide of 2026. Investigators are still seeking leads and urge anyone with information to contact Harrisburg police or submit a Crimewatch tip.

3. PA Dept of Health Provides Update on Measles Outbreak as Cases Reach 540 (pa.gov) — State health officials in Harrisburg report that Pennsylvania's measles outbreak has reached 540 confirmed cases across 36 counties, with 91 hospitalizations and two deaths so far this year. Residents are urged to get the MMR vaccine, with pop-up clinics and health centers across the state offering shots and a DOH dashboard tracking cases and vaccination progress.

4. Curve bullpen comes up big in 7-3 win over Harrisburg (lewistownsentinel.com) — Harrisburg baseball fans saw the Altoona Curve top the Senators 7–3 at FNB Field, powered by a big five-run fourth inning and strong bullpen work. Harrisburg continues the home series Thursday night, with left-hander Josh Hartle slated to start for the Senators and tickets available for locals who want to catch the action in person.

5. Shapiro Backs Flock Ban as Pa. Surveillance Fight Grows (mychesco.com) — State leaders meeting in Harrisburg are weighing whether to ban or tightly restrict Flock Safety license-plate cameras and similar systems, a move that could reshape how police track vehicles across Pennsylvania. Gov. Josh Shapiro now supports a statewide Flock ban, while legislators debate options ranging from outright prohibition to stricter rules on data retention, sharing, and access that would affect departments statewide.
