Hazleton City enters into partnership with ICE under 287(g) program (wnep.com) ā Hazleton officials have entered a 287(g) partnership with ICE that lets 23 city police officers perform certain federal immigration duties, sparking protests and legal questions from immigrant advocates. Community leaders at Hazleton One Community Center say fear and detentions are already discouraging residents from seeking help or volunteering, while Mayor Jeff Cusat defends the agreementās legality and financial reimbursements.

3. UGI to begin months-long gas main project in Hazleton (wnep.com) ā UGI is starting a months-long natural gas main installation in Hazleton today, with weekday work running 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through late July and possible traffic delays. Many local residents say the upgrades to old gas lines are worth the inconvenience and see the construction as an improvement for their neighborhood and city.

4. Judge rejects misconduct claim in Hazleton overdose case (citizensvoice.com) ā A Luzerne County judge has ruled that prosecutors did not commit misconduct in the overdose death case involving a Hazleton man, allowing the charges to move toward a June trial. The decision also limits what jurors can hear about past drug activity while permitting testimony about alleged prior drug deliveries to the victim earlier in 2021.
