All-Star Game Umpire Has Montco Ties
Alan Porter, a Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate, is behind the plate for Tuesday night's All-Star game in Philadelphia.

HATBORO / HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — When Major League Baseball umpire Alan Porter dons the mask behind home plate at baseball's All-Star Game on Tuesday night, he will have a cheering section from eastern Montgomery County.
Porter graduated from Hatboro-Horsham High School in 1995, and both of his sons also attended Hatboro-Horsham schools, said Peter Moore, a math teacher at Keith Valley Middle School.
"To be chosen as the crew chief for the All-Star Game in his hometown is a tremendous honor, and I couldn’t be happier for him. Knowing how respected he is throughout Major League Baseball and seeing firsthand the work he’s put in over the years, I can’t think of anyone more deserving," Moore said of Porter.

"Al’s selection as the crew chief for the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park is incredibly well deserved," Moore told Patch. "I’ve known Al for most of my life, and nothing about this surprises me. From the time we were kids, he always had an incredible drive to be the best at whatever he was doing. Whether it was as a player, a teammate, or now as an MLB umpire, nobody has ever outworked him or cared more about doing things the right way."
Moore said that Porter is as dedicated to his profession as anyone he knows.
Porter played baseball and football at Hatboro-Horsham before continuing his career on the diamond at Montgomery County Community College.
He made his Major League debut as an umpire in 2010, and since then he has worked in numerous playoff series including the 2025 World Series.
"His attention to detail, ability to communicate, calmness under pressure, and commitment to helping the people around him improve are what make him such a respected leader," Moore said of Porter. "Those are the same qualities he had as a teammate years ago, and they’re the same qualities that make him such a great friend today. Al is family to me, my wife, and my children."
