Join Carl Martin, Wildlands Conservancy's Director of Property Stewardship, for a guided exploration of Black River Sanctuary's Right-of-Way Stewardship Project. This program will showcase the habitat restoration work completed to date, highlight the ecological benefits of managing utility corridors for wildlife, and provide an inside look at future plans for the site. 
 
Participants will learn how strategic vegetation management, invasive species control, native plant establishment, and ongoing stewardship efforts are improving habitat connectivity and biodiversity across the preserve. Along the tour, Carl will discuss current restoration successes, challenges, and the long-term vision for transforming the right-of-way into a thriving habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.

This guided hike offers a unique opportunity to explore permanently protected farmland and forest in Berks County and learn from conservation professionals about the planning, partnerships, and hands-on stewardship required to care for these special places. Along the way, discover how a property’s history, ecological conditions, and conservation goals come together to shape long-term land management. 
 
Participants will gain insight into the challenges and opportunities involved in stewarding protected lands, as well as practical ideas for becoming better stewards of the land in their own communities. Learn how thoughtful conservation and land management practices can improve habitat, protect natural resources, and create healthier landscapes for both wildlife and people. 
 
The program is part of Walk in Penn’s Woods, a statewide event that encourages people across Pennsylvania to explore and appreciate the Commonwealth’s forests while learning more about their ecological, cultural, and recreational value.

Join Wildlands Conservancy for a guided hike through the remarkable landscape of Lehigh Gap Nature Center, where one of the region's most impressive environmental restoration stories continue to unfold. Decades of zinc smelting left this area severely contaminated, but extensive restoration efforts beginning in the 1980s transformed barren rock slopes into thriving habitats filled with native plants and wildlife. Today, otters, beavers, and a variety of bird species can be found throughout the preserve's 756 acres and 13 miles of trails. 

Our approximately 2.2-mile loop hike begins on the L&amp;NE Trail, where interpretive displays highlight the area's mining and railroad history. We'll visit viewpoints overlooking the site of the former New Jersey Zinc Company's West Plant before continuing along the Bobolink Trail and returning via the Delaware &amp; Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Trail, a level crushed-stone trail that is part of the larger 165-mile D&amp;L Trail stretching from Bristol to Wilkes-Barre. 

Participants who would like a little more adventure can join an optional walk around the 0.4-mile Prairie Warbler Loop, which features native, pollinator-friendly plant communities. Arrive early to explore the exhibits in the Osprey House Visitor Center and enjoy the beautiful native wildflower gardens.These programs are possible thanks to generous funding from Jefferson + LVHN.
