A Home Run for Inclusion: DCIU Volunteers Team Up with Miracle League

The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) was proud to demonstrate its commitment to community engagement and inclusion by partnering with the Miracle League of Delaware County on September 28. Dozens of DCIU volunteers served as “buddies” to athletes participating in the organization’s baseball program at the MSI Sports Complex in Upper Chichester.

The opportunity grew out of the efforts of two teachers at DCIU’s Marple Education Center, who saw a meaningful way to connect the experience with DCIU’s broader goal of increasing community engagement.

More than 20 DCIU staff members and students took part in the event, spending the evening supporting and engaging with athletes with disabilities.

The Miracle League was created to provide children and adults with disabilities with the opportunity to experience the joy of playing baseball. Through the organization’s Buddy Program, each player was paired with a volunteer who assisted and supported them throughout the game. Beyond helping athletes participate in baseball, buddies helped create meaningful connections, friendships, and memorable experiences.

The Miracle League welcomes athletes with a wide range of physical and intellectual disabilities who may otherwise be unable to participate in traditional baseball leagues. By creating an inclusive environment where every athlete has the opportunity to play, compete, and be part of a team, the organization helps ensure that all participants can experience the benefits of recreation, teamwork, and community involvement.

“At DCIU, we believe in creating opportunities for connection and belonging, both within our schools and throughout our communities,” said Dr. Jim Scanlon, DCIU Interim Executive Director. “Participating in the Miracle League Buddy Program was a wonderful way for our staff and students to support incredible athletes, build relationships, and demonstrate the power of inclusion in action.”

During the evening’s games, DCIU volunteers assisted athletes by offering encouragement, companionship, and support while sharing in the excitement of the experience. The program provided an opportunity for volunteers to connect directly with community members, support an important local organization, and make a meaningful impact. Through partnerships like this, DCIU continues to foster meaningful community connections while advancing opportunities for inclusion, belonging, and engagement throughout Delaware County.
