Local officials share personal close calls to underline how convincing these schemes can be.
   

• Fred Beans Automotive Group hosted nine blood drives in July (dailylocal.com) — Newtown residents may have rolled up their sleeves at the local Fred Beans Ford dealership, which joined eight sister locations in a July blood-drive push that collected 282 pints for the American Red Cross. As part of Ford's nationwide "Summer of Community Impact" campaign, donors at each site also received free mobile service like oil changes or tire rotations.
