9/11 Memorial Has New Home In Montco

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Montgomery County’s 9/11 Memorial has arrived at its new home.

It was a seven-mile journey on Tuesday as the 18-foot monument traveled from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety campus in Eagleville to Elmwood Park.

The memorial — which includes a steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center — made its way through Lower Providence and West Norriton under waving flags and alongside local first responders, laborers and union workers.

First responders, community partners, and residents lined the procession route to witness the journey ahead of the 25th anniversary on Sept. 11.

There will be a public rededication ceremony for the memorial on Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at Elmwood Park.

The move comes as the country marks the 25th anniversary on Friday of the Sept. 11 attacks on America, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people in the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and in a field in Shanksville.

The memorial, designed by sculptor Sassona Norton, includes steel recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center and has been part of the county’s remembrance efforts for more than two decades.

The memorial's new home will now stand as a permanent and more accessible place for remembrance, county officials said.
