Montco's 9/11 Memorial To Be Moved From Eagleville To Norristown

NORRISTOWN, PA — Officials in Montgomery County are moving the 9/11 Memorial ahead of the 25th anniversary next month from Eagleville to Elmwood Park in Norristown.

The memorial is currently located at the county's emergency operations center. Officials want it to be more visible.

“Relocating this memorial to a centrally located part of Elmwood Park allows residents of all ages to more easily visit and reflect on this pivotal moment in history," Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder shared in a statement.

The 18-foot monument was commissioned by the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners in 2003. Sculptor Sassana Norton constructed it with an I-beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

It was officially erected at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Sept. 2005, and then moved to Eagleville in 2021 when construction began on the new courthouse.

The procession of the memorial to its new home will be public. Members and volunteers from more than a dozen construction firms with the Philadelphia Building Trades will complete the relocation accompanied by a motorcycle escort and law enforcement from around the county.

It will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, traveling from Eagleville through Lower Providence and West Norriton, arriving at Elmwood by about 10 a.m.

Public viewing areas for the event have been established by police at Elmwood Park, Centennial Park in West Norriton, and at the Lower Providence Fire Department.

Darin Maher of IUOE Local 542 helped to organize the procession.

A re-dedication ceremony for the memorial will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. in Elmwood Park.
