Shatterproof, Dana Block’s autobiographical dark comedy comes to Philadelphia for three performances on September 18, 26, and 27 before its anticipated Off-Broadway run. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, the play tells the story of a sister’s quest to help her younger brother — a gifted artist and comedian (think Robyn Williams) – whose schizophrenia sends him on the road hitchhiking for decades. Inspired by Block’s own experiences growing up in a close-knit Jewish family, Shatterproof gives voice to the sibling experience of losing a cherished loved one to an illness whose only promise is, it cannot be cured.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Shatterproof shares a wildly funny portrait of an artistic Jewish family from St. Joseph, Missouri, before unfolding the extraordinary story of Dana’s relationship with her brother. As a teenager, Marc’s schizophrenia leads him to hitchhike across America in an attempt to outrun his illness and find himself. Twenty years later, Dana begins a journey of her own—to try to bring back her brother.&nbsp;
The original material for the show is drawn from Marc’s journals, drawings, and writings, and brings audiences inside both the brilliance and chaos of his mental illness. Through humor, honesty and compassion, the play invites audiences to laugh at Marc, laugh with Marc, and fall in love with Marc and his utterly mischievous personality.
The title Shatterproof reflects the role Dana found herself playing within her family: the person who could hold the center and the only person who had the guts to go out and to try to find him. Dana discovered that loving her brother did not mean having the power to make decisions for him — it meant learning to accept that regardless, he had possession of his own life and that it was his right to live it as he wanted.
At a time when conversations about mental health have never been more urgent, Shatterproof reminds us that behind every diagnosis is a family painfully navigating impossible choices—and that even in our darkest moments, laughter can become an act of survival. Join us for our FREE Open House to learn more about the Brass &amp; Wind Project, a program for students grades 3rd-6th who are interested in learning the musical skills essential to playing a band instrument. 
In weekly large and small group classes, fundamental skills will be taught, allowing the student to thrive in a low-pressure and supportive environment. Skills taught include: 
<ul><li>Body awareness skills: breathing, blowing, posture and how to properly hold an instrument. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Executive &amp; technical: embouchure formation, finger control &amp; dexterity, and basic tone production. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Musicianship skills: singing, playing, moving, improvising, creating music of all kinds, and reading music notation alone and with others. </li></ul>
The skills learned will prepare them for participation in a traditional Band program and allow them to transition to playing a full-sized band instrument with relative ease. 
No prior experience with instrumental music is required. Students are taught by a Master Teacher and supported by Temple University undergraduate music education and performance instrumental interns.

What if what you knew about flutes was only part of the story? In the very old days, fluting had heft. These intentional, slow-crafted compositions reconnect to this elemental power. Return to the root through solo woodwind adventures, dark green Zen and forgotten breathing methods.

Featuring original compositions plus the occasional Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix or John Coltrane arrangement, this is an intentional presentation of the soul-shifting tone of a rare low-pitched, root-end bamboo flute. At the crossroads of solo recital, porch blues, spiritualist séance and cave ritual, we will shift to an elemental perception and participate in a breath-powered odyssey that is both rustic and virtuosic – earthy and ethereal. It will engage subtle-perception and transmit the range of vital energies that saturate primeval nature.
The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@CorneliusBoots" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Cornelius Boots YouTube channel</a>&nbsp;has over 500 videos of shakuhachi being performed in venues and various natural settings around the world since 2011, and it gives you a sense of the elemental nature music you will be experiencing up close in one of Philadelphia's historic spaces. In 2026, Boots is celebrating 25 years of studying, practicing, teaching and conjuring a new voice for this ancient instrument. The program will include about 9 selections from his growing catalog (about 57 originals and 12 arrangements) of compositions written specifically for this rare woodwind instrument, contextualized by green man folklore, breathing secrets and tales from his variegated woodwinding life.
About the Artist
Cornelius Boots is an internationally active composer-performer, lifelong woodwind innovator and the inventor of chthonic breathing. He is a licensed grandmaster of Zen shakuhachi, creator of progressive rock, jazz and blues styles and repertoire, and a former bass clarinet pioneer. As Philadelphia’s premiere rustic virtuoso, Boots’ purpose is to transmit the spirit of primeval nature through the rigorous artistry and unique tone of the bass shakuhachi flute, honoring the dual regional lineages of John Coltrane (cosmically creative musicianship) and the Wissahickon hermits (devotional nature spirituality). The founder of Black Earth Shakuhachi School, Boots grew up in Yardley where he started playing the clarinet in 1983. His first professional gig was subbing into the Mummers Parade on alto sax in 1988, then he spent 32 years living elsewhere, and now resides in Wyndmoor. In addition to grants, awards, commissions and many recordings, Boots was a featured performer and lecturer at World Shakuhachi Festivals 2016 (Prague), 2018 (London) and 2025 (Texas), World Bamboo Congress 2018 (Mexico), Clarinetfests 2008, 2011 and 2013 and his Sony E3 2018 Ghost of Tsushima live performance has over 6 million views on YouTube.
A three-time graduate of the renowned Jacobs School of Music (BM Classical Clarinet ’97, BS Audio Recording ’97, MM Jazz Studies ’99), Boots’ training and work experience is deep and diverse: jazz saxophonist, swing clarinetist, symphony bass clarinetist, funk and progressive rock bandleader and founder/composer of the world’s only composing bass clarinet quartet, Cornelius continues to develop Hermit Jazz &amp; Nature Blues: a robust, cross-cultural solo style utilizing rare breath-defying techniques and maximum panstylistic prowess.
In 2013, Boots was given the shakuhachi name "Shinzen" (depth Zen or deep Zen). In 2022, he was awarded a Dai Shihan (grandmaster) certificate in for his contributions and innovations.

The program will explore academics, residential life, extracurricular opportunities, student support, the admissions process, and preparation for secondary school. Following the discussion, families will have time to meet representatives from participating schools, ask individual questions, and learn more about each school’s distinctive community and programs.
Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:15 p.m. Families are welcome to arrive later and join us as their schedules allow.
