Phillies Vs. Braves Wild Card Preview: Reasons To Believe This Red October

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Chaos and desperation brought a rollercoaster 2026 season to a close Sunday afternoon at a muddy Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies clinched their fifth consecutive postseason appearance in the final game of the regular season.

As the sixth and final seed in the National League, the Phillies will play the third seeded Atlanta Braves in the opening Wild Card round.

This Red September could not possibly be more different from the Red Octobers of the past two years, when the Phillies earned a first round bye with one of the best records in baseball throughout the regular season.

Instead the Phillies began this year 9-19 and spent months clawing their way back into the postseason picture to earn a wild card slot. They'll enter the postseason as underdogs, likely in every round they play in, for the first time since the magic 2022 run.

Yet despite that horrid start and an ugly finish, the Phillies are far better positioned for another deep run than many fans and analysts believe.

Here's what you need to know:

Schedule

MLB has chosen to schedule the Phillies vs. Braves at 2 p.m. on three consecutive days this week, Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 29, Sept. 30, and Oct. 1 if necessary. Two wins are required to take the best of three series. All three games are away in Atlanta.

How to watch and TV details

All three games will be broadcast on NBC and will be streaming on Peacock.

Since games are nationally broadcast, Phillies fans do not get the benefit of Tom McCarthy calling play by play. Those duties will fall to Matt Vasgersian. John Kruk will still be a color commentator, along with C.J. Nitkowski.

Anatomy of an archrival

The Braves are a formidable opponent, taking the NL East crown away from the Phillies this year after the Phillies won it the past two seasons. The Braves finished 94-68. The Phillies finished six games back at 88-74.

2026 marks the third time in the past five years the Phillies and Braves have met in the postseason. The Braves were big favorites in both 2022 and 2023, coming off 101 and 104 regular seasons in which they were bona fide World Series contenders. The Phillies upset them both times, in the NLDS, 3 games to 1.

Skeptics will point to the Braves 9-4 regular season dominance over Philly this year, though astute fans know that two of those games were 1-run losses that easily could've gone either way.

Projected pitching matchups

Only Chris Sale for the Braves in Game 1 has been officially announced, but the following alignments seem most likely:

• Game 1: Jesus Luzardo (likely to be followed by Andrew Painter) vs. Chris Sale
• Game 2: Cristopher Sanchez vs. Tyler Mahle
• Game 3, if necessary: Zack Wheeler (on short rest, or Aaron Nola) vs. Grant Holmes

Sanchez had to pitch Friday, and Wheeler Sunday, to secure the Phillies spot in the playoffs. So they won't be available to start until games 2 and 3. Luzardo is a third ace, but it's not clear how deep into the game he'll be able to pitch Tuesday as he's just returned from a three week trip to the injured list.

Reasons to believe

The Braves, for all their strengths, have struggled mightily against top tier pitching, particularly as of late. And even tired as they may be from the past week, the Phillies still boast the best starting rotation in baseball.

According to an analysis of all 12 playoff teams by ESPN's Paul Hembekides, Braves hitters have the worst OPS against "premium" pitchers since the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Phillies, for all their offensive struggles, rank 5th.

Moreover, the Phillies are starting three of those premium pitchers against the Braves this week: Luzardo, Sanchez, and probably Wheeler on Thursday if the game is necessary. All three dominated the Braves in the regular season.

Of course Braves pitchers, particularly Sale, also dominated the Phillies. But if the pitchers get the job done, the Phillies might not need more than a few runs to win.

Biggest question marks

Luzardo was one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. He seems to be fully recovered from the shoulder inflammation that caused him to miss the final weeks of the season, but questions persist about how deep into the game he can throw.

And if Luzardo must be pulled early, can the rookie Painter continue with the elite form he flashed in the second half of the season?

Trade deadline acquisition Luis Arraez hurt his ankle last week and is not on the Wild Card series roster. He could return if the Phillies advance to the NLDS. In his stead, the Phillies will use some combination of Edmundo Sosa, Derek Hill, and Bryan De La Cruz.

The Braves boast elite left handed pitching, headlined by Sale. It's a poor matchup for the Phils, whose best offensive punch comes from their big lefties in Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. Right handers like Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, JT Realmuto, Sosa, Hill, and De La Cruz could be crucial to offensive production.

Odds and predictions

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Braves are minus 1.5 favorites, and minus 200 favorites on the moneyline. Most major analysts concur and are calling for a Braves victory.

Prediction: The same Phillies core that pulled off miracle upsets in 2022 and 2023 is still here, and though it's older it's just as lethal. It's surrounded by a roster that's arguably more talented and more flawed at the same time. The Phillies offense is as hot and cold as it's ever been. Their pitching relies on a handful of herculean performances from starters rather than a balanced and deep bullpen. But just like those teams, the 2026 Phillies are a squad built to win short October series. Most of the innings can be eaten up by their aces. And Jhoan Duran is a weapon they didn't have before. They play well under pressure and they don't give up, especially when they're trailing in the late innings. Phillies take the very low scoring series 2-0, winning each game by a run.
