Man Charged After Violence Spree Leaves 1 Dead, Multiple People Injured

Police said the man fatally stabbed a woman, chased another with a gun, and tried to run down several people with his car.

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA — A Homestead man is facing multiple charges in connection with a series of violent incidents that left a woman dead and injured several others this week.

Allegheny County police recently arrested 43-year-old George Mitchell II and charged him with multiple counts, including homicide, aggravated assault and robbery.

Shortly before 9:40 p.m. Thursday, police received a call about a woman who was stabbed in the 700 block of Penny Drive. The woman, later identified as 45-year-old Jinx Hairston, was taken by private vehicle to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

After interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance video and collecting additional information, detectives later identified Mitchell as the person responsible for the stabbing.

Following the investigation, police said detectives also determined Mitchell was involved in a series of other violent incidents that occurred on Thursday before and after the fatal stabbing.

At 3:10 p.m., Eastern Regional Mon-Valley police responded to Bell Avenue in North Braddock after a woman reported she was threatened by a man with a gun. Police said the woman told officers she was approached from behind by a man who grabbed her and held a gun to her head. According to police, the man then proceeded to chase her around a parking lot while pointing the gun at her as she tried to get away. The woman was not injured.

Around 4:2o p.m., Penn Hills police were called to the 100 block of Dauntless Drive after a person attempted to carjack an elderly couple at knifepoint. Police said the couple told officers a man approached each of them separately, held a knife to their necks and demanded their keys. According to police, the man dropped the keys at the end of the driveway and fled in a black Cadillac sedan. The victims were not injured.

At the same time, police also responded to two reports of a black Cadillac sedan hitting or attempting to hit several people.

The first incident occurred in the 2100 block of Sampson Street, where a man and a child reported that they were struck by a vehicle. According to police, the victims were working on a sewer grate near the road when a black Cadillac sedan veered off the road and struck them. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where they are in stable condition.

Additionally, Wilkinsburg Police were dispatched to the 1600 block of Doyle Street, located near Sampson Street, where two juvenile girls reported being struck by a vehicle.

Finally, around 7:30 p.m., Penn Hills police were called to the area of Lindberg Avenue and Laketon Road after an attempted stabbing. Police said the victim reported he was walking in the 700 block of Penny Avenue when he was nearly struck by a black Cadillac sedan. According to police, the driver of the vehicle then got out of the vehicle, approached the man and attempted to stab him with a knife.

Mitchell was denied bail and remains at Allegheny County Jail.
