Pittsburgh To Get New Whiskey Tasting Room

PITTSBURGH, PA —New life is being breathed into H. Obernauer & Company, a long-forgotten Pittsburgh whiskey company founded in 1885 and out of business now for more than a century.

Matthew Obernauer, the great-great grandson of company founder Herman Obernauer, is reviving the brand and will open a tasting room on Smallman Street in the Strip District in the near future.

The tasting room will open in space formerly occupied by Kingfly Spirits, which abruptly closed in February.

"As a whiskey-maker, Herman was successful thanks to his dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and integrity," said Matthew Obernauer, H. Obernauer & Co. owner and chief revival officer. "We're proud to revive his legacy and begin a new chapter for a name that still upholds those values."

According to Matthew Obernauer, at a time when Pennsylvania was among the nation's leading whiskey-producing regions, his great-great grandfather built a successful whiskey business based on the principle that his word was as good as his bond.

"As a whiskey rectifier and blender, he earned a reputation for quality and integrity; he personally stood behind the quality of his products by putting his name on the label."
