1. Two people wounded in Reading shooting Tuesday evening, police say (berksweekly.com) — Two people were wounded in a Tuesday evening shooting in Reading, after shots were reportedly fired at an SUV near the 1100 block of North 10th Street and the vehicle crashed by Marion and Moss streets. Reading police found both victims with gunshot wounds and took them for treatment, but have not released their identities or conditions. Authorities say this is a developing case and more details will follow. 
2. Reading to host 5th annual back-to-school giveaway on Aug. 19 (berksweekly.com) — Reading families can pick up free school supplies, food, haircuts, and vision screenings at the city’s fifth annual Back-to-School Giveaway on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 644 Penn Street. Hosted by Mayor Eddie Morán and State Rep. Manny Guzman, the event aims to help local students start the year prepared, with free parking available at the Reading Parking Authority’s 6th and Cherry lot.
3. Data Centers and PennEnvironment (Part 1) (bctv.org) — A new episode of BCTV’s “Building Green” was filmed right in downtown Reading, where host Bill and PennEnvironment’s Flora Cardoni break down what data centers are and how they affect the environment. The conversation also touches on the rapid growth of AI and what that means for energy use and local communities. Reading-area residents are invited to pitch and produce their own shows on BCTV.
4. Barkley Finds His Forever Home Thanks to Berks County Readers (bctv.org) — Readers across Berks County, led by Reading District Libraries, logged over 504,000 minutes in this summer’s Pages for Pets challenge, sponsoring the adoption of Barkley the corgi. The Reading-based district library system has now helped four shelter pets find homes while promoting literacy and community action for local families.
5. Helping Harvest distributes record 12.5 million pounds of food in FY2026 (berksweekly.com) — Helping Harvest reports a record 12.5 million pounds of food distributed this fiscal year, including expanded school pantries serving the Reading School District and nearby districts. The food bank’s Weekender and pantry programs now reach more older students while its Community Kitchen partners with Reading-area agencies like Opportunity House and Safe Berks.
