TREDYFFRIN, PA — With all election precincts reporting, 70 percent of Tredyffrin residents have voted to change the township's home rule charter for the first time in half a century.

As one of Pennsylvania's many "home rule" towns, Tredyffrin has a charter that guides the local government's structure and procedures. This election cycle, township residents voted on whether to change the charter for the first time since 1976, when it was first instituted.

(17 of 17 precincts reporting results)

  • Yes: 9,551
  • No: 4,109

All vote counts remain unofficial until certified on a later date.

The ballot question asked residents to vote "yes" or "no" on making 40 amendments to the charter.

As proposed, the township government's overall structure remains the same. But the revisions incorporate modern technology, institute gender-neutral language, and eliminate older regulations that have changed in the decades since they were first written.

It would also speed up the process for approving the township's annual budget, reducing required public notices. Additionally, Tredyffrin's Board of Supervisors would no longer have to vote on whether to "introduce" the final budget. But the supervisors would still hold public hearings and vote publicly on whether to advance the preliminary budget and adopt the final budget.
