Pins Tested At Calhoun Street Toll Bridge

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission said it awarded a contract for pin testing at six bridges over the Delaware River.

MORRISVILLE BOROUGH, PA — The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission recently tested pin connections at the Calhoun Street Toll Bridge.

DRJTBC consulting engineers ultrasonically tested 252 iron pin connections at the 142-year-old span that connects the borough with Trenton, N.J.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission awarded contracts for non-destructive bridge pin testing at six bridges in 2026.

Most Commission bridges do not have structural pin connections.

Pins are a specialized type of connection, similar to a heavy-duty bolt, that connects critical joints on certain types of bridges.

Because pins are often shielded by eyebars, hangers, collars, or spacers, they are inherently hard – if not impossible – to visually inspect and evaluate, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission said.

Ultrasonic testing makes inspection possible by using a transducer and a receiver to transmit high-frequency sound waves, allowing for evaluation of structural pins without damaging bridge components.
