Woman Struck By Truck And Killed In Cranston Identified
Officers are attempting to "establish her movements prior to the incident," police said.

CRANSTON, RI — The woman struck by a pickup truck and killed early Sunday has been identified as a 56-year-old whose relatives described as "homeless and transient," police said.
The woman, Vaune Vacarro, had a last known address in Utica, New York, but her relatives "had not seen or heard from her in several years," according to a media release from the Cranston Police.
"According to family members, Ms. Vacarro had previously resided in multiple states, including Florida, California, Colorado, New York, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts," the release said.

Vacarro was walking on Scituate Avenue about 4:15 a.m. when she was struck and killed by a Toyota Tacoma driven by Cranston resident Richard D'Amico, 30.

Crash reconstructionists determined Vaccaro was knocked about 42 feet from the point of impact, police said.
An Amazon worker found Vacarro, who had suffered "catastrophic injuries," and "immediately contacted 911", according to the release.

"Despite life-saving efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene by the Cranston Fire Department at 4:23 a.m.," the release said.
About an hour after the woman was struck and killed, a "Cranston resident arrived at the scene and spoke with investigators," the release said.
This resident informed police that D'Amico "told him he was traveling on Scituate Avenue during the early morning hours and believed he had struck something with his vehicle, possibly a deer or an object," according to the release. "The vehicle involved was identified as a 2023 Toyota Tacoma registered in Rhode Island."

Police obtained a warrant for D'Amico's arrest and a related search warrant, the release said.
D'Amico surrendered to police about 7 p.m. Monday. He was arraigned and released on $5,000 surety bail.
While Vacarro's relatives had not been in contact with her for years, "no missing person report had been filed for (her) prior to the crash," police said.

"The Cranston Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding why
Ms. Vacarro was in the area at the time she was struck," the release said. "As part of the ongoing investigation, officers are checking nearby homeless encampments and following up on any information that may help establish her movements prior to the incident.
Vacarro was about 5-foot-4 and 114 pounds, according to the release, and was wearing a black jacket over a black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and pink shoes.
