• URI Metcalf Institute's Annual Leeson Lecture presents an exclusive screening of Rosanna Xia's ‘Out of Plain Sight' (uri.edu) — URI’s Metcalf Institute in Kingston is inviting the public to a June 23 Leeson Lecture featuring an exclusive screening of Rosanna Xia’s award-winning documentary “Out of Plain Sight” and a discussion with the filmmaker. The free event, part of Metcalf’s annual workshop on plastics, pollution, and PFAS, will be held from 3–5 p.m. at Corless Auditorium on URI’s Narragansett Bay Campus.

• The Professor Behind the Plan: Farhad Atash Shaped Communities and Generations of Students (uri.edu) — A longtime URI planning professor based at the Kingston campus, Farhad Atash is retiring after 41 years of shaping Rhode Island communities and mentoring generations of planners. His studio courses connected students with real projects like the InterLink hub at T.F. Green Airport, and colleagues and alumni credit his calm guidance with strengthening both the department and the state’s planning profession.

• The URI fisheries and technology program legacy (savingseafood.org) — A look back at URI’s once-groundbreaking Fisheries and Marine Technology program highlights how Kingston’s flagship university helped train generations of commercial fishers and marine technologists from 1967 to 1985. Former faculty explain why hands-on skills like net making and celestial navigation faded as technology and New England’s fishing industry changed, and how the program evolved into today’s broader bachelor’s degree.
