📰 News we're reading

• Portsmouth takes aim at data centers (eastbayri.com) — Portsmouth's Town Council has unanimously ordered staff to draft an ordinance that could ban large data centers and commercial-scale battery energy storage systems, citing concerns over appearance, safety and environmental risks. Planners will consult state regulators before any public hearing, while upcoming council meetings this fall will shape how — or if — such facilities can locate in town.

• When Island Park had its own movie theater (eastbayri.com) — Longtime residents may remember when Island Park's big boat-storage building on Park Avenue was actually the Island Theatre, a 502-seat movie house opened in 1946 by Portsmouth resident Orville Smith. The story revisits its heyday of double features, grocery giveaways and serial cliffhangers, its survival of fires, and how the once-glamorous venue quietly shifted into the practical role it serves Portsmouth today.

• Rhode Island Foundation awards $290K to Newport County nonprofits (pbn.com) — Portsmouth residents are among those to benefit from $290,000 in Rhode Island Foundation grants supporting education, housing, food access, health care, and the arts across Newport County. More than 50 nonprofits in towns including Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, and Jamestown will use awards up to $10,000 to expand services such as food pantries, shelter programs, senior support, and disability workshops.
