Community Libraries of Providence, League of Women Voters Providence Present Three mayoral Debates
Mount Pleasant, Rochambeau and South Providence Libraries will host Q&A Sessions with Candidates

Community Libraries of Providence (CLPVD) will partner with League of Women Voters of Providence (LWV Providence) to present three public mayoral debates. Candidates for the next Mayor of Providence will answer questions about neighborhood issues and share their ideas for the city’s future. Debates will take place before an in-person audience and be live-streamed to CLPVD’s YouTube channel. Providence residents will be able to submit questions to candidates and tell them what they think about schools, libraries, safety, the economy, and other issues of concern to the community.
The debates will take place as follows:
- Monday, July 20 at Mount Pleasant Library, 315 Academy Avenue (401-272-0106)
- Thursday, July 23 at Rochambeau Library, 708 Hope Street (401-272-3780)
- Tuesday, August 4 at South Providence Library, 441 Prairie Avenue (401-467-2619).
All debates are 6:00PM - 7:30PM and LWV Providence will act as moderators. Candidates David Morales, Brett Smiley, Dave Talan and Allen Waters have accepted the invitation to participate, while a fifth candidate, Charles Sherman, is unavailable.

CLPVD’s Executive Director, Cheryl Space, said, “Our community libraries play an essential role in the life of Providence and choosing a new mayor is an important decision for its residents. We hope that by offering these debates, we can help Providence voters make an informed choice.”
Hollie Courage, president of LWV Providence, added, "As a nonpartisan political organization, the Providence League is pleased to partner with the Community Libraries to give Providence citizens this opportunity to hear and evaluate the candidates for Mayor."

LWV Providence’ website provides comprehensive information about elections and the voting process in Rhode Island, as well as position statements on a range of social and economic issues. The deadlines for registering to vote and to apply for a mail-in ballot for the September 9 Statewide Primary are August 10 and August 19 respectively; for the General Election on November 3, they are October 4 and October 13.
