Smithfield Police Thwart Scam, Arrest Central Falls Man: Cops

SMITHFIELD, RI — The Smithfield police say they thwarted a scam and arrested a Central Falls man on an attempted larceny.

A Smithfield resident called the law Wednesday and said "he had an individual on the phone who was trying to scame them out of money," the police department said in a media release.

"The homeowner was instructed to wrap $5,000 cash in newspaper, place it in an envelope, and a man by the name of 'Ismail' was going to arrive at their ouse in a white Toyota Rav4 to collect it," the release said.

The police department was involved in this, the caller claimed, as the resident's son had been in the accident and the money was needed for bail, according to the release.

A white Rav4 did arrive at the house and pulled into the driveway, the release said.

The driver walked up to the door, identified himself as Ismail and said he was there for the envelope, according to the release.

The police then "moved in" and arrested the driver, identified as 59-year-old Ismail Aderibigbe, the release said.

Aderibigbe was charged with attempted of more than $1,500.
