2. Sumter summer jobs program for teens accepting applications; deadline is May 1 (wltx.com) — Teens who live within Sumter city limits can now apply for the city’s long-running Summer Youth Employment Program, which places students in government offices and local businesses and teaches workplace skills. The program offers two tracks based on age, emphasizes responsibility and time management, and has a May 1 application deadline with income requirements.

3. Driver dies after early morning crash into tree (wach.com) — A driver died after their Honda Civic ran off U.S. 378 near Pinecrest Drive in Sumter County early Tuesday and hit a tree. The driver was the only person in the car and later died at the hospital. The Sumter County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name as the Highway Patrol continues investigating.

4. 6 charged in Sumter and Lee County drug trafficking conspiracy (theitem.com) — Federal authorities have charged six people after a Homeland Security Task Force investigation into alleged drug trafficking in the Sumter and Lee County areas, with local police and deputies heavily involved. Several defendants are from Sumter, and officials say the case is part of a broader push targeting violent gangs and drug activity. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

5. Midlands woman follows up $1,000 win with $200,000 with ticket bought in Sumter (theitem.com) — A Midlands woman turned a $5 Star Power scratch-off bought at Quick Corner on W. Liberty Street in Sumter into a $200,000 prize after previously winning $1,000 on the same game. The Sumter store earned a $2,000 commission, and two more top prizes remain available for players statewide. Lottery officials say tickets can also be entered for a trip giveaway.
